Greetings!

The entire Elder Law Associates PA team would like to thank all of the frontline healthcare workers who are giving it their all right now in the midst of the coronavirus. Their dedication, commitment to serve, and tireless devotion to caring for all of their patients is appreciated and valued by all. To thank them for everything that they are doing to keep their patients and our community safe and well during the COVID-19 pandemic, we would like to offer healthcare workers free legal documents to communicate their preferences in the event of a personal health catastrophe. We would be honored to assist them by drafting Living Will and Designation of Health Care Surrogate documents free of charge during this worldwide health crisis. These two essential advance directives help you legally express your preferences regarding your medical wishes and end-of-life care.  Watch our video above and read more about this special offer here.
Howie was interviewed about these essential legal documents on April 30 on WPTV (Channel 5 NBC news in West Palm Beach). You can read the story and watch his interview here.

In our newsletter this month, be sure to read the next installment of our blog series on Howie’s mom’s journey through the long-term-care system regarding Medicare discharges . In addition, Ellen writes about how critical it is to have a Living Will in place to ensure your wishes are honored by family and physicians . At Elder Law Associates PA, the health and safety of our clients, colleagues, friends, vendors and staff members are critically important. As we discussed previously, our firm remains open and committed to serving you through this crisis. We are holding all consultations either over the phone or through video conferencing, with all signings in our outdoor plaza. Please contact us or call 1-800-ELDERLAW or (561) 750-3850 to schedule a consultation with one of our attorneys. Stay well!

My Own Mother’s Journey Through the Long-Term-Care System , Part 2
After reading a story in the news recently about  nursing homes that were illegally and inappropriately evicting elderly or disabled residents  when their Medicare ran out, it reminded me of the time during the summer of 2019 when my mom was discharged too soon from a nursing home, only to end up back in the emergency room two days later.  Mom had been in the nursing home for over two weeks (from June 12-July 2), when the nursing home abruptly discharged her due to her Medicare coverage days coming to an end (she had prematurely used most of her 100 Medicare days in a prior rehab stay). She was informed that she needed to start paying out of her own pocket (private pay) because she had reached her limit for Medicare. The nursing home declared her to be “fully independent” and discharged her, or “kicked her out,” according to my mom.   Read More

Sam (not his real name) was 88 years old and in the hospital. His heart and lungs were failing, and he wasn’t eating. He lay in bed moaning and was not able to communicate his needs and wants. He was blessed with three sons who loved him dearly. All three were at his bedside. Sam owned a burial plot up north, but he did not have a Living Will and he did not have a pre-need burial or cremation contract. Read More
We wanted to let you know we are bidding a very special goodbye to our wonderful office receptionist and greeter extraordinaire, Barbara Beckman, who has decided to retire after 20 years with the firm. “I will greatly miss all of my coworkers and all of the lovely clients that we serve,” said Barbara, whose last day in the office will be May 29.

“Barbara has been an integral part of our law firm for the last 20 years,” said Ellen S. Morris, Esq., Partner at Elder Law Associates PA. “We know that all of our clients, friends, vendors and colleagues, and of course all of our attorneys and staff members, will miss her. She has been the reassuring voice and cheerful greeting to everyone who has called or visited our office, and she leaves a big hole in our hearts. We wish her the very best and a long, healthy and enjoyable retirement.”

“Barbara Beckman has been with us for the last 20 years and, quite frankly, it is difficult to imagine what life at Elder Law Associates PA might be like without her,” said Partner Howard S. Krooks, Esq., CELA, CAP.  “Barbara has greeted every single caller over the last two decades, whether it be a client, potential client, someone with a question about elder law or special needs planning, directions to the office and everything in between. She has been the first voice our clients have heard for over 20 years, and we are very grateful to have Barbara as our front line for so long. We wish her the very best as she enters the next chapter of her life!”

We will be celebrating Barbara throughout the month of May. Because she has touched so many with her kindness and quiet wisdom through the years, we thought you might like the opportunity to wish Barbara all the best and send her on her way to a happy retirement. You can send an email with your message to our marketing department at marketing@elderlawassociates.com and we will make sure Barbara gets it. As the saying goes, good friends don’t really say goodbye. They simply say, see you again soon!
